Everyone knows about ODU playing Notre Dame in the NCAA's, but I thought I'd start a thread for the CAA teams playing in other postseason tournaments.

First off, W & M and NU are both 5 seeds playing 4 seeds on the road, UNC and UCONN, respectively. I'm pretty excited about the Tribe making the NIT, just their second postseason ever, although I feel like we got jipped on a home game (probably to placate UNC for having to settle for the NIT).

Honestly, I feel like we have a pretty good chance at UNC; we play the best when we have to get psyched for games (Wake Forest, Richmond, first VCU game, Maryland) where we're really playing without much to lose. As for NU, UCONN has been a startlingly inconsistent team, so, depending on which team shows up, NU might have a shot.

Making the other tournaments are Hofstra, VCU, & Mason. VCU is griping about not making the NIT despite finishing fifth in the conference. Based on conference performance, Mason and Drexel had better arguments to make it, but that's VCU.

As for Mason, Coach Larranaga is spinning this as best he can, saying it'll be a great learning experience to have some postseason play for his young team. Whatever floats your boat, I guess.

I wish good luck to all CAA postseason players, especially ODU to represent the CAA well and my Tribe in the NIT!

I had a brain cramp about halfway through that, so take Drexel out of the mix as teams that could've made arguments for the NIT over VCU, but yeah...go Tribe!

Quick team by team update on CAA postseason teams, now that each team has played at least one game...including the big one of the day.

Fairfield 101 GMU 96 (OT) CIT

After taking a 63-36 lead early in the second half, Fairfield rallied to beat the Patriots to advance to the second round of the CIT.

VCU 79 George Washington 73 CBI

Rams lead whole way, despite runs and threats by GW, to advance to second round of CBI.

Eye-uh-pooey 74 Hofstra 60 CBI

Hofstra shot 35.7% including 2-19 (gross) from behind the arc to lose in the first round of the CBI. IUPUI came out to a 21-2 lead to start the game, with IUPUI leading by as much as 17 early in th second, and then held on the rest of the way despite an 11-2 run at one point for Hofstra to head to the second round of the CBI.

UCONN 59 NU 57 NIT

Improving on a 6 game streak and 34-4 record against NU, UCONN overcame a 6 point deficit with 6 to play to sneak out a win over geographic rival NU in senior Matt Janning's last game as a Husky to advance to the second round of the NIT.

UNC 80 W & M 72 NIT

W & M traveled to Chapel Hill to play in their second-ever postseason game and NIT and took on not-actually-able-to-defend national champion UNC at historic Carmichael Arena. Going down 0-9 within the first 90 seconds of the game, W & M took a timeout and gained the lead 12-11 by the first tv timeout. The Tribe then went cold against UNC and went into the second half down ten 33-43.

Coming out strong from the second half, W & M charged to cut the lead to four in a shooting exhibition in the first five minutes of the half. On the strong shooting of seniors David Schneider and Danny Sumner, W & M totaled 16 three pointers, at one point taking the lead by 5 with around 6 minutes to play. Like the first half, however, the shooting went cold and the Tribe failed to score over the last 5 minutes of the game as UNC closed 11-2 and won by 8. Sad face.

ODU 51 ND 50 NCAA 1st Round

Having not won an NCAA game in 15 years, the CAA champs ODU Monarchs went into Thursday's first round game against ND confident and underseeded. Starting off a bit shaky, ODU turned the tide on a 5 point trip into the offencive zone via a two point bucket and a turnover that became a traditional three point play. As those in the CAA would know, ODU made this a defensive battle that played in ODU's favour. With ND missing a three pointer that rattled out in the waning seconds of the game, ODU announced their arrival to the NCAA tourney and achieved the CAA's first tourney win since VCU's last second upset over Duke on an Eric Maynor teardrop in 2007.

Good luck to VCU in th second round of the CBI and, more importantly, ODU in the second round of the NCAA tourney against the winner of Baylor/Sam Houston State.

I guess I'm about a week late with this, but, as we all know, ODU lost last week to Baylor, knocking the CAA's rep to the tourney out after ODU's first win since the mid 90's and the conference's first victory since VCU beat Duke in 07.

Over in the CBI, on Monday VCU beat the College of Charleston 93-86, then played Boston U. on Wednesday. An 88-75 victory has brought the Rams to the CBI Championship Series against the Billikens of St. Louis which will begin on Monday with a game at the Siegel Center in Richmond. The second game of the best of three series will be played in the Lou on Wednesday, and a third, decisive game (if necessary) would be played on Friday in an as yet to be determined location.

A win in the CBI would mark the CAA's second straight postseason victory, after ODU won the CIT last season against Bradley.

As it stands now, the CAA is 4-5 in 2010 postseason play with a victory and a loss by ODU in the NCAA's, one loss each by W & M and NU in the NIT, three wins by VCU and a loss by Hofstra in the CBI, and a loss by GMU in the CIT.

Thanks for holding down the CAA fort, Josh! I finally got around to registering my membership, so I can help out.

VCU plays St. Louis tonight in game two of the championship for one of the other tournaments that's not the NCAA.

Glad to see another CAA guy in here...even if you are a VCU fan, haha. Congrats on winning the CBI! That was a great game, from what I saw of it, coming back from 9 at the half.

I was at Mulligan's in the Fan last night and they had the game on HDNet with a fair amount of VCU folks watching it; I was playing poker, but was keeping an eye on the game...happy to see the CAA represented well by y'all. That's two CAA postseason tourney wins in the last two years after ODU's CIT win last season.

Even if the games don't have the significance of the NCAA's, it's great for the players to get a little more time together, and fun for the loyal fans to have a little more time with their team. I know I did with W & M in the NIT.

Woo CAA!
